چکیده

Measurements with a bare p-type high purity germanium diode (HPGe) submerged in a 19 kg liquid argon (LAr) scintillation detector at MPIK-Heidelberg are reported. The liquid argon–germanium system (LArGe) is operated as a 4π anti-Compton spectrometer to suppress backgrounds in the HPGe. This R&D is carried out in the framework of the Gerda experiment which searches for 0νββ decays with HPGe detectors enriched in Ge. The goal of this work is to develop a novel method to discriminate backgrounds in 0νββ search which would ultimately allow to investigate the effective neutrino mass free of background events down to the inverse mass hierarchy scale. Other applications in low-background counting are expected.

The progress in the development of the new international Gerda (GErmanium Detector Array) experiment is presented. Main purpose of the experiment is to search for the neutrinoless double beta decay of Ge. The experimental set up is under construction in the underground laboratory of LNGS. Gerda will operate with bare germanium semiconductor detectors (enriched in Ge) situated in liquid argon. I...

Status Report of the GERDA Phase II Startup

The GERmanium Detector Array (GERDA) experiment, located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) of INFN, searches for 0νββ of Ge. Germanium diodes enriched to ∼ 86 % in the double beta emitter Ge(Ge) are exposed being both source and detectors of 0νββ decay. Neutrinoless double beta decay is considered a powerful probe to address still open issues in the neutrino sector of the (beyon...

Operation of a GERDA Phase I prototype detector in liquid argon and nitrogen

The GERDA (GERmanium Detector Array) experiment aiming to search for the neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ) of Ge at the Laboratori Nazionali Del Gran Sasso (LNGS), Italy, will operate bare enriched high-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors in liquid argon. GERDA Phase I will use the enriched diodes from the previous Heidelberg-Moscow (HdM) and IGEX experiments. With the HPGe detectors mounted ...

Search for Double Beta Decay with Hpge Detectors at the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory

Neutrinoless double-beta (0νββ) decay is practically the only way to establish the Majorana nature of the neutrino mass and its decay rate provides a probe of an effective neutrino mass. Double beta experiments are long-running underground experiments with specific challenges concerning the background reduction and the long term stability. These problems are addressed in this work for the Heide...

Gamma Spectroscopy with Germanium Detectors

The MAJORANA collaboration[1] aims to detect neutrino-less double beta decay (0νββ) in Ge, using an array of germanium p-type point contact detectors. An important factor in this effort is the minimization of backgrounds from any hardware which is needed to operate the detectors. In order to best understand and minimize this background, one must analyze the gamma spectrum from these pieces of h...
